Design is Not Art

  • About

An exploration of an exhibit proposal created in my Typography III class, celebrating the iconic work of Massimo Vignelli and his lasting impact on design. The purpose of the project was to design a proposal in the style of a chosen designer. I chose Massimo Vignelli because his approach honestly aligned the most with my own style.

He is best known for his subway‑map design, and for his use of layered typography and geometric shapes. I initially experimented with the subway‑line concept, but it didn’t feel like the right direction. After some trial and error, I shifted my focus to layered type and circular forms, really playing with those ideas as well as the bright colours used in much of his work. I also used the title “Design Is Not Art,” a direct quote from Vignelli himself, because it stood out to me the most and captured the essence of his design philosophy.

If you do it right
it will last forever.
